DEC Reminds Anglers - Until June 15, Black Bass Season is Closed for Lake Ontario's Eastern Basin, St. Lawrence River, and Tributaries

Largemouth and Smallmouth Season Closed Until June 15, Including Catch-and-Release

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reminds anglers that largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing is prohibited until June 15 for the Jefferson and St. Lawrence county waters of Lake Ontario, St. Lawrence River, and tributaries. This closed season includes catch-and-release fishing. DEC has posted signage alerting the public of black bass fishing regulations at numerous boat launches in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties.

Anglers are reminded to read the current New York State fishing regulations for the water they plan to fish before heading out. It is an angler's responsibility to know when the seasons are open in their area, as well as the legal manner of taking for the species fished. For waters currently open to catch-and-release bass fishing, consult the 2022 Fishing Regulations Guide or go to the freshwater fishing regulations webpage.

Beginning angler or decades-long enthusiast, DEC encourages everyone to experience the variety of fishing opportunities the New York State has to offer. For any questions specific to Region 6 waters, contact fwfish6@dec.ny.gov. For statewide questions contact fwfish@dec.ny.gov.
