DEC Encourages Public Comment on Draft Hinckley Reservoir Day Use Area Unit Management Plan

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is encouraging the public to comment on a draft Unit Management Plan (UMP) and a supplemental generic environmental impact statement for the Hinckley Reservoir Day Use Area. The draft UMP includes additional recreational opportunities to create a full-scale DEC Campground at this location.

DEC will accept public comments on these documents through Friday, Oct. 2, 2020. Please submit comments through mail or email: Josh Houghton, NYS DEC Bureau of Recreation, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233-5253; campinfo@dec.ny.gov; or submit comments through the online survey (leaves DEC website).

The Hinckley Reservoir Day Use Area is on the south shore of the 2,880-acre Hinckley Reservoir at 281 Stormy Hill Rd, Cold Brook, NY, and currently includes a beach, woods, trails, pavilion, spacious lawn, picnic area, and volleyball court.

The draft UMP calls for:

  • 2.8 miles of roads
  • 150 campsites
  • 4 comfort stations
  • Trailer dump station
  • Solid waste and recyclable collection building
  • Second staff housing building
  • Hand-carry boat launch facility
  • Extension of potable water system and electric system
  • Multiuse trail system
  • Firewood storage building
  • Replacement of bathhouse, beach comfort station and ticket booth
  • Reconstruction of supervisor's cabin and garage
  • Construction of pavilion at Price's Point and playground in day use area

The draft UMP for Hinckley Reservoir Day Use Area and a presentation on the draft plan are available on DEC's website. Copies of the draft plan are also available in electronic format on compact disc and may be requested by calling (518) 457-2500. The UMP will guide future management of the facility over the next five years.
