DEC to Host 'First Day' Hikes Jan. 1

Excursions in St. Lawrence and Oneida Counties

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced two opportunities to participate in a "first day hike" on Jan. 1, 2020.

St. Lawrence County
What: Mt. Arab First Day Hike, moderately difficult two-mile round-trip hike.
When: January 1, 2020- POSTPONED to January 25, 2020 due to weather conditions
Where: Trailhead parking area, located on the Mt. Arab Road
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Directions: From NYS Route 3 (near Piercefield) turn onto Conifer Road. Follow Conifer Road for almost two miles to Mt. Arab Road, on the left. Follow Mt. Arab Road for about one mile to the parking area on the right. Mt. Arab Parking Area and Trailhead for the Mt. Arab fire tower (44.213689°N, 74.596110°W).

Oneida County- CANCELLED due to weather conditions
What: Utica Marsh Wildlife Management Area (WMA) First Day Hike, not difficult but plan for hiking in snow.
When: January 1, 2020
Where: Meeting location: Wildlife Management Area Parking Lot which is located on Harbor Lock Road, right off Genesee Street, City of Utica.
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Directions: Wildlife Management Area Parking Lot which is located on Harbor Lock Road, right off Genesee Street. For both hikes, participants must dress appropriately for winter hiking conditions. Snow shoes or crampons may be useful. Bring water, snacks or anything else you may need for a hike. Pets are allowed but must always be leashed and under the control of the owner.
