DEC Announces $450,000 Upgrades to Mud Lock Boat Launch Site

Improvements Support Governor Cuomo's Adventure NY Initiative to Connect New Yorkers with Nature

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the completion of $450,000 in upgrades to the Mud Lock boat launch located at the north end of Cayuga Lake in the town of Aurelius, Cayuga County. Funding for the project was provided through Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's Adventure NY initiative to connect more New Yorkers with nature.

Site upgrades totaling more than $450,000 will reduce congestion and improve the safety of boaters using the site to launch and retrieve boats. Enhancements include:

  • Construction of a new concrete launch ramp and floating boarding docks to allow launching under lower lake levels;
  • Redesign and paving of the launch access and boat preparation area for safer and more efficient launching; and
  • Paving and striping of the parking area to accommodate 21 vehicles with trailers and 7 single vehicles, including accessible parking.

"The north end of Cayuga Lake offers a diverse array of scenery, wildlife, and fish for outdoor enthusiasts to explore, observe, and pursue," said DEC Region 7 Director Matthew Marko. "The recent improvements to Mud Lock will provide a safer and more convenient launching experience for all visitors."

Cayuga Lake is the second largest of the 11 Finger Lakes and supports diverse cold- and warmwater sport fisheries including largemouth bass, chain pickerel, northern pike, crappie, yellow perch, sunfish, gar, and bowfin. Current fishing information is available on DEC's Central New York Fishing Hotline.

The launch will remain open late into the season for use by waterfowl hunters. DEC operates the launch in cooperation with the town of Aurelius and New York State Canal Corporation.

Anglers and boaters are asked to be aware of the part they may play in the spread of invasive species and to take action to help stop their spread. Following recommended guidelines such as properly cleaning, draining, and drying your boat and gear will lessen the likelihood of spreading these species and diseases as you fish or boat.

Under Governor Cuomo's Adventure NY initiative, DEC is making strategic investments to expand access to healthy, active outdoor recreation, connect more New Yorkers and visitors to nature and the outdoors, protect natural resources, and boost local economies. This initiative is supporting 75 projects over three years with many more to come, ranging from improvements to youth camps and environmental education centers to new boat launches, duck blinds, and hiking trails.
