Reinstein Woods Announces Spring Volunteer Opportunities

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in partnership with Friends of Reinstein Woods, is seeking volunteers to engage in trail projects, species monitoring, and education throughout the spring and summer at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in the town of Cheektowaga. Community members who enjoy getting outside and want to help maintain healthy wetlands are encouraged to apply.

To explore the range of volunteer positions, community members are encouraged to attend a Volunteer Orientation on Saturday, March 16 at 10:30 a.m. at Reinstein Woods. During that session, staff will explain in detail the variety of volunteer positions available at Reinstein Woods.

For example, citizens who enjoy a leisurely walk in the woods may enjoy becoming "citizen scientists" who monitors native plants and squirrel populations. Volunteer Trail Stewards participate in "Trail Thursdays," held weekly from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. beginning in May. Stewards care for Reinstein Woods' trails and gardens and remove invasive plants. Enthusiastic volunteers who have a passion for nature and a desire to share their knowledge with others will learn how to become a Nature Guide.

Additionally, Reinstein Woods will hold a Phragmites Strike Team training on Thursday, April 18 at 5:30 p.m. Strike team volunteers monitor and remove an invasive plant, Phragmites australis, that is threatening the wetlands at Reinstein Woods. No experience is needed, just a love of nature and a desire to help a local habitat.

Registration is required for both trainings. For more information or to register, contact Reinstein Woods at (716) 683-5959. Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center is located at 93 Honorine Drive in Depew, about three miles from the Walden Galleria mall.
