DEC to Host 'First Day' Hike at Winona State Forest on Jan. 1

Cross Country Ski or Snowshoe through State Forest to Celebrate New Year's Day

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced a "first day hike" on Jan. 1, 2019, to be held at Winona State Forest. DEC staff will lead members of the public on a cross-country skiing or snowshoeing trip through the forest. The first day hike is an excellent way to celebrate the New Year and connect with nature.

What: "First Hike" at Winona State Forest
When: Tuesday, January 1, 2019
Where: Winona State Forest, CCC Camp parking lot
Time: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

What to bring: Participants need to bring their own equipment, skis, or snowshoes, and water, and dress appropriately for winter conditions.

Level of difficulty: The hike will consist of a 2.25-mile loop with an option to do a 3.5-mile loop. Both loops are generally flat to rolling and suitable for all abilities. Pets are allowed but must always be leashed and under the control of the owner.

Directions: From Interstate 81, take Mannsville exit 39, then take County Route 90 east through Mannsville. About 2.75 miles out of Mannsville, County Route 90 meets Dixon Road and turns to the right. This route bears left at the intersection with Wart Road and then right at Brown Road.

The historical CCC camp is another mile down the road. The CCC Camp may also be accessed from County Rt. 92 (Lorraine-Redfield Rd.) by taking County Rt 90 west for approximately 2 miles. Parking is on the right. All coordinates provided are in decimal degrees using NAD83/WGS84 datum. CCC Parking: (43.712803°N, 75.970619°W).

The 9,233-acre Winona State Forest is in southern Jefferson and northern Oswego Counties and is on the western edge of the Tug Hill Plateau. The Winona Forest Recreation Association (WFRA) will provide light refreshments following the event. Each participant will receive a New York State Parks "First Day" light fleece headband and sticker.
