Local Students to Become Scientists for 'Day in the Life of the Buffalo River'

Annual Event Connects Students with Buffalo River Watershed

On Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., students from area schools will collect scientific information and share during a "Day in the Life of the Buffalo River." New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), in partnership with Friends of Reinstein Woods, is sponsoring this sixth annual event.

During this event more than 300 students from 14 local schools and home school groups will collect scientific data along the Buffalo River and its major tributaries, creating a snapshot of the watershed. Students will use hands-on field techniques to describe their sites, measure water clarity, test water chemistry, and investigate aquatic life. The data collected by students will be posted online to allow classes to compare results with other sites and data from previous years.

The program is modeled on the Hudson River Estuary's "Day in the Life" program established 15 years ago. At each site, an environmental educator from Reinstein Woods or a partnering organization will assist students and share their own knowledge of the river's watershed. Participating schools, partners, and event locations are listed in the table on the following page.

To schedule a visit to a participating site, or for more information, contact Reinstein Woods at (716) 683-5959.
