DEC and Partners Announce, "Dare to Repair" Café Event at Reinstein Woods on Jan. 27

Event to Divert Waste from Landfills Hosted by DEC, Friends of Reinstein Woods, University Heights Community Laboratory, University Heights Tool Laboratory, Knowledgefire and City of Buffalo

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today that local residents can get broken lamps, vacuums, snowblowers, and electronics fixed, clothes mended, and knives sharpened free of charge at a Dare to Repair Café at Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center on Saturday, Jan. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"As we enter a new year, we often think of the expression 'Out with the old, in with the new.'" The Dare to Repair Café challenges us to fix the 'old' instead of buying new, which helps the environment by diverting waste from landfills," said Meaghan Boice-Green, Reinstein Woods Center Director.

At the Dare to Repair Café, volunteer "repair coaches" work alongside event attendees to fix broken items. Although a fix is not guaranteed, repair coaches are often able to send people home with a repaired item. Even if the repair cannot be made at the event, attendees walk away with the knowledge that they gained during their repair session. This event will also include a demonstration on toilet repairs, and volunteers will be available to discuss basic car repair and masonry repair. Friends of Reinstein Woods will be offering hot beverages and cookies for sale while fixers are hard at work.

Dare to Repair Café is a local take on a global Repair Café movement that seeks to build community, divert items from the waste stream, and establish a sustainable mindset. DEC is collaborating on this event with the University Heights Community Laboratory, University Heights Tool Laboratory, Knowledgefire, Friends of Reinstein Woods, and the city of Buffalo.

Previous Dare to Repair Café events in the Buffalo area have resulted in hundreds of pounds of waste diverted from landfills. Future events will be posted on the University Height's Tool Library's web site, (link leaves DEC website).

Registration is not required for this free event. Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve is located at 93 Honorine Drive, off of Como Park Boulevard in Cheektowaga. For more information, contact Reinstein Woods at 683-5959, or visit
