Chaumont Barrens Preserve
Chaumont, Jefferson County
The Chaumont Barrens offers one of the finest examples of alvar grasslands in the world. Alvars are broad, flat, naturally open habitats with only a thin veneer soil over a base of limestone or dolostone. Here you can see rare plants, including wildflowers like prairie smoke, found nowhere else in the Northeast.
