West Central New York is comprised of an eleven county area and offers a wide range of fishing opportunities. There are various pristine and scenic water bodies incorporated within Region 8. With the abundant and varying habitats, from lakes to ponds to streams or rivers, anglers have a wide selection of fish species and angling methods to choose from. Whether it is trolling from a boat, casting from shore, wading or ice fishing, year round fishing flourishes in Region 8.

Fishing Hotline
NYSDEC provides an online fishing hotline that is updated weekly and provides current fishing information for selected waters. The regional hotline can be viewed at Central New York Fishing Hotline and Lake Erie and Western New York Fishing Hotline
Angler Diary Programs
The NYSDEC Region 8 Fisheries Unit is responsible for fisheries management in West Central New York. Region 8, along with Region 7, has an ongoing Finger Lakes Angler Diary Program with Region 8 covering Canadice, Canandaigua, Conesus, Hemlock, Honeoye, Keuka and Seneca Lakes. Region 8 also has a West Central Angler Diary Program on Waneta Lake and the following Lake Ontario bays: East, Port, Sodus and Irondequoit Bays. The information contained in the diaries is compiled at the end of the season and an annual summary is composed for each lake and angler. The information is very beneficial to the management of the fishery. If you would like to become an Angler Diary Cooperator, please call (585) 226-5343 or send an e-mail to Region 8 fisheries. Please include Angler Diary Cooperator in the subject line and include your name and address as well as which lake(s) you primarily fish. A diary, introductory letter and instructions will be mailed to you.
