Camping Suspensions on State Lands

As of July 2, DEC has resumed issuing backcountry/primitive camping permits for groups of 10 or more people who wish to camp for more than 3 nights at one location.

DEC had temporarily suspended overnight camping at the facilities listed below, but all have now re-opened with the exception of Sugar Hill and Evergreen Pond in Region 8.

Region 3- Lower Hudson Valley

  • Peekamoose Valley Camping Areas - Lower, Middle, Upper, and Trailer Fields (Sundown Wild Forest, Town of Denning, Ulster County) - re-opened July 1

Region 4- Capital Region/Northern Catskills

  • Spruce Grove Camping Area (Bear Spring Mountain Campground, Catskill Forest Preserve, Town of Downsville, Delaware County) - re-opened June 26

Region 6- Western Adirondacks/Upper Mohawk Valley/Eastern Lake Ontario

  • Otter Creek Horse Trail (Independence River State Forest, Town of Glenfield, Lewis County) - re-opened July 2

Region 7- Central New York

  • Long Pond Camping Area (Long Pond State Forest, Town of Smithville, Chenango County) - re-opened June 26
  • Balsam Pond Camping Area (Balsam Swamp State Forest, Town of Pharsalia, Chenango County) - re-opened June 26
  • Hunt's Pond Camping Area (Hunt's Pond State Forest, Town of New Berlin, Chenango County) - re-opened June 26
  • Stoney Pond Camping Area (Stoney Pond State Forest, Town of Nelson, Madison County) - re-opened June 26
  • Cherry Ridge Camping Area (Charles E. Baker State Forest, Town of Brookfield, Madison County) - re-opened June 26
  • The Assembly Area (Charles E. Baker State Forest, Town of Brookfield, Madison County) - re-opened June 26
  • Moscow Hill Camping Area (Charles E. Baker State Forest, Town of Brookfield, Madison County) - re-opened June 26
  • Spruce Pond Camping Area (Morgan Hill State Forest, Town of Fabius, Onondaga County) - re-opened June 26

Region 8- Rochester/ Western Finger Lakes

  • Sugar Hill Recreation Area - The fire tower, the gate off Tower Hill Road, and facilities (bathroom, water, campsites) at the Sugar Hill Rec area remain closed. Day use is allowed, but visitors will need to walk from the gate off Tower Hill Road. (Sugar Hill State Forest, Town of Orange, Schuyler County)
  • Sanford Lake Camping Area (Birdseye Hollow State Forest, Town of Bradford, Steuben County) - re-opened June 19
  • Evergreen Pond Campsites will remain closed for summer of 2020 due to an active logging job and to prevent the community spread of COVID-19. (Ossian State Forest, Town of Ossian, Livingston county)

Region 9- Western New York

  • Hannum Road Campsites (Chautauqua Gorge State Forest, Town of Chautauqua, Chautauqua County) - re-opened June 26
  • Jasper Park Campsites (North Harmony State Forest, Town of North Harmony, Chautauqua County) - re-opened June 26
  • West Almond Horse Trail System - Stewart Forest Road and Route 244 Camping Areas (Palmer's Pond, Phillips Creek, and Turnpike State Forests, Towns of Ward and West Almond, Allegany County) - re-opened June 26
  • Palmer's Pond Campsites (Palmer's Pond State Forest, Town of West Almond, Allegany County) - re-opened June 26
  • Camp Seneca and Little Rock City Campsites (McCarthy Hill and Rock City State Forests, Towns of Mansfield, Little Valley, Ellicottville and Great Valley, Cattaraugus County) - re-opened June 26
  • East Otto Campsites (East Otto State Forest, Town of East Otto, Cattaraugus County)- re-opened June 26
