Negative Declaration

Allegany County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Herbicide Application to Establish Forest Regeneration will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves the application of registered herbicides to 73 acres of interfering vegetation including beech, hophornbeam, and Bush honeysuckle in the forest understory. Application methods may include, foliar, cut stump, and cut frill or stem injection commonly, known as "hack and squirt" or a combination of these. This will create conditions suitable for seed germination and establishment of desirable commercial timber species such as Sugar maple and oak and ecologically valuable habitat within one to two years. The abundance of undesirable plant species present on the site are growing at a density that interferes with the development of desirable forest regeneration. Herbicide application is the most effective way to eliminate undesirable plant species that interfere with the development of desirable forest regeneration. The project is located in the Vandermark State Forest in the Town of Ward, New York.
