Article 25 Tidal Wetlands
Article 15 Title 5 Excavation & Fill in Navigable Waters
Section 401 - Clean Water Act Water Quality Certification

Project is Located:

Riverhead, Suffolk County

Project Description:

Applicant proposes to restore tidal flow to a regulated tidal wetland area that was formally used as a dredge material disposal site. This necessitates the removal of 130 trees and will be accomplished by excavating a channel connecting the area to Terry's Creek and by installing a box culvert under an existing gravel roadway. The resultant 5,082 cubic yards of excavated material is proposed to be placed along the channel to create a berm. Sediment sampling revealed contaminants that will be contained by placing 2,170 cubic yards of additional fill from an upland source to cap the berm, and 1,765 cubic yards of additional fill from an upland source to cap the bottom of the proposed channel. Native, salt-tolerant wetland plants are proposed to be planted within the areas targeted for restoration. The project is located at Indian Island County Park on the south side of Terry's Creek, Town of Riverhead, Suffolk County, SCTM# 600-112-2-2.1.
