Project Description:

Maintenance dredge areas to hard bottom in the two ponds at Nassau County Bailey Arboretum removing accumulated silts and sediments, yielding approximately 5,500 cubic yards of spoil. Dredged material will be hydraulically removed and placed in geotubes adjacent to ponds for dewatering. Erosion control/turbidity control will be installed to prevent any visible turbidity downstream of the Northeast pond. Once dewatering complete, the material will be disposed of at a Long Island landfill. In addition, a cofferdam will be installed while repairing the culvert and outfall walls. The Department has made a tentative determination to approve this application for a new permit for an existing discharge of 800 gallons per day of treated car wash wastewater to groundwater from municipal settling tanks and filtration treatment plant at the facility located at 601 Middle Island Rd., Middle Island, NY 11953. The proposed discharge is located within an area designated as a sole source aquifer. The following water purveyors have been identified as having service areas located within a 3 mile radius of this faculty: Suffolk County Water Authority and Brookhaven National Lab.

Project Description:

Applicant proposes to install a series of shoreline stabilization structures to protect an eroding shoreline from further erosion. The proposal involves the installation of three rock sills constructed in tidal wetlands classified as littoral zone (LZ). Clean, upland sand is proposed to be placed landward of the rock sills in the tidal wetlands area classified as coastal shoals, bars and flats (SM) and planted with native, salt-tolerant vegetation. The bluff in the tidal wetlands adjacent area (AA) is proposed to be further stabilized with the installation of a cantilevered bulkhead covered with clean sand and planted with native grasses. The purpose of the project is to protect the parkland landward of the bluff. The project is proposed in Indian Island County Park on the eastern shore of Circle Drive, Town of Riverhead, Suffolk County, SCTM# 600-112-2-2.1.
