Project Description:

Applicant proposes an upgrade to the existing intake / outtake pipes for the Flax Pond Laboratory. The applicant proposes to construct two 1,340 feet long intake pipes and one 470 foot long outfall pipe. The intake pipes will be horizontal drilled approximately 4' below the apparent bottom out into Flax Pond. A 10' x 18' concrete intake structure will be constructed at the seaward end of the pipes for maintenance access. A fixed platform, approximately 1466 square feet, will be constructed over the intake structure and sixteen - 8' x 20' floating upweller systems (FLUPSY) units will be connected to the platform for shellfish aquaculture. The proposed activity will take place at Flax Pond in Setauket, Suffolk County Tax Map Number #203-11-1-4.1

The applicant proposes to modify existing permit to recognize importation of finished products within the Life of Mine. These products include, crushed stone, crushed concrete aggregate and finished compost (created offsite from yard trimmings) to create salable aggregate products and sand-based soils. In addition, this modification removes the provision allowing vegetative waste to be brought to the site for reclamation purposes. All future reclamation will be done using loam that already exists on the site. The applicant proposes the installation and operation of a geothermal system consisting of two (2) 4-inch diameter geothermal supply wells and three (3) 4-inch diameter geothermal diffusion wells to be utilized for cooling purposes, and the installation of one (1) 4-inch diameter irrigation well (NYSDEC Well No. S-135407). Each supply well shall be constructed to a depth of approximately 70 feet below grade and each equipped with a pump capacity of 30 gallons per minute (gpm). The diffusion wells shall be constructed to a depth of 70 feet below grade. The irrigation well shall be installed to a depth of approximately 70 feet below grade and equipped with a pump capacity of 10 gpm. All water pumped from the geothermal supply wells shall be used for air conditioning purposes only. A propylene glycol-based water solution will be used as the heat exchange fluids for the geothermal system. All water pumped from the geothermal supply wells must be returned to the ground via the proposed diffusion wells.
