Five Rivers' Tails by Mail

Five Rivers Environmental Education Center offers thematic educational kits featuring biological specimens, posters and curriculum enhancement ideas. Funded by Friends of Five Rivers, the kits are available to teachers and youth leaders by mail or pick up, and may be borrowed for up to two weeks. Kits picked up at the Center carry no charge. To have a kit mailed, postage must be paid in advance.

Monarch Butterflies (grades pre-K -3)

Giant puzzle, mounted monarch, caterpillar replica, 2 easy reading books, migration game, finger puppets, reference materials, stencils, worksheets, and teaching guide.

Owls of New York State (grades K-8)

Video, owl feather, talon, pellets[3], sorting chart, owl mobile, posters, ZooBook, reference materials and teaching suggestions.

Insects and Other Creepy Crawlers (grades K-8)

Video, audio tape, plastic insects, posters, magnifiers, observing boxes, mounted insects, ZooBooks, identification guides, reference materials and Nature Scope Teaching Guide.

Endangered Species (grades K-8)

Video, posters, worksheets, whale tooth replica, Karner Blue Butterfly replica, on loan materials from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Ranger Rick Magazines, reference materials and Nature Scope Teaching Guide.

Trees (grades K-8)

Video, tree parts, hand lenses, poster, information on free seedlings, tree ID key, reference materials, and Nature Scope Teaching Guide.

Amphibians (grades K-8)

Video, audiotape, puzzle, posters, puppets, amphibian replica, reference materials and Nature Scope Teaching Guide.

Mammals (grades K-8)

Video, skulls, vertebrae, reference materials including books, posters, identification charts and Nature Scope Teaching Guide.

Wild Turkeys (grades K-8)

Multi-curriculum lesson plans including math, science, history, language arts, creative writing, technology and design. Bulletin board, CD, CD Rom, video, posters, feather, turkey call, skull, egg replica, reference materials.

Reptiles (grades K-8)

Video, multi-level research books and flyers, turtle and snake skulls, snake skin, turtle shell, reptile egg, posters, Zoo Books, Nature Scope Teacher's Guide.

River Life (grades 3 - 8)

Fish identification mobile, eagle talon replica, muskrat pelt, fish scales, Hudson River map and tide chart exercises, fish print materials, wetlands puzzle, reference materials, 2 easy reading books and Nature Scope Teaching Guide.

Honey Bees (grades 3 - 8)

Video, Life Cycle replica, 3 easy reading books, puppet, wax and comb, poster, lesson plans, information sheets, coloring book, honey sticks.

Climate Change (grades 3-8)

Video, solar cell motor, tree ring, poster, free book, reading books for multiple grade levels, recording sheets, cloud identifier, teacher resource books, student resource books, teaching guides.

Rocks and Minerals of New York State (3 - 8)

Video, New York State rock and mineral samples, data sheet for each specimen, activity and informational books, wall charts with suggested activities, reference materials, student guides, activity sheets, magnet, streak plates.

Notes on Shipping:

  • If you are unable to pick up kits at Five Rivers and would like them mailed to you, please contact the center at or (518) 475-0291 for shipping prices. Kits are mailed via USPS. Shipping costs vary based on the weight of the kit and the destination.
  • A check covering the cost of postage (made out to Five Rivers Limited) must be received before the kits are shipped.
  • Kit(s) will be mailed 3 days prior to requested date; we cannot guarantee arrival date.
  • Borrowers are responsible for shipping kits back to Five Rivers or hand-delivering them.
