Summer Teacher Institute: Day in the Life of the Niagara River/Lake Erie Watershed

Dive into watershed STEM, become a certified GLOBE educator, and plan a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience for your students in this immersive two-day training. Participants will be eligible to borrow Watershed STEM kits throughout the schoolyear. For educators of students in grades 5-12. Twelve CTLE hours provided. $25 fee to cover program experiences.

DEC Climate Justice Working Group to Meet

What: The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) 13-member Climate Justice Working Group, established under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), will hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 20. The Climate Justice Working Group is tasked with establishing criteria for identifying disadvantaged communities for the purposes of co-pollutant reductions, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, regulatory impact statements, and the allocation of investments pursuant to the CLCPA.

This meeting will be conducted by teleconference. Members of the public are welcome to listen to the meeting via webcast.

Take part in ongoing research on monarch butterflies. For more than 15 years, we have collected data at Five Rivers and contributed to the University of Minnesota’s continent-wide citizen science project. The goal of the MLMP is to better understand how and why monarch populations vary, with a focus on their distribution and abundance during the breeding season in North America (Canada, Mexico, and United States). For more than 15 years, data collected at Five Rivers has been contributed to this continent-wide citizen science project conducted through the University of Minnesota. You can join volunteers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in conserving monarchs and advancing understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Wear long pants and bring a sun hat and water. We will meet at the visitor center. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn about the project.

Space is limited and registration is required. Call 518-475-0291 by the Saturday prior to register. 

For the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers, and in compliance with guidance from New York State, the New York State Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), social distancing practices must be followed. Masks must be worn throughout guided programs, while at a roving program, and on the trails whenever a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained between individuals or households.

Creatures of the Night:  Humans are not adapted for life in the total dark, but many animals are! We will take a full moon walk to look for signs of these amazing creatures while using our senses to safely explore a trail at night.  We'll also play wildlife games to discover some of the unique adaptations that help nocturnal animals to navigate, hunt and survive in the dark.

This calendar provides a listing of all DEC-sponsored events that are open to the public. You can click on any event in the calendar to view additional details about the event. Note that the events at environmental education centers will only display in the region in which they are located, even though they serve residents from adjacent areas.
