All other freshwater fishing regulations still apply.

  • Become an ambassador to the sport; take a friend fishing for the first time.

 Draft Sunfish and Crappie Management Plan - Comment Deadline

The draft plan proposes more conservative statewide fishing regulations and establishes the “Big Panfish Initiative” that aims to provide unique opportunities by managing for larger-sized crappie and sunfish in certain waters. The draft plan is available on DEC's website and public comments will be accepted through Feb. 15, 2021.

Enhance your family’s scientific learning this winter by scheduling a Family Fieldtrip to Five Rivers! Meet a Friends naturalist to head afield for one of four offerings: Animal Tracking, Snowman Birdfeeders, Snowshoeing, and Sap to Syrup. (Sap to Syrup is offered in March only and runs at additional times. See Registration Form for details.)

 Five Rivers: Snow Snake Creation and Racing

Snow Snake is a traditional Haudenosaunee game played during the winter. The object of the game is to throw your Snow Snake (a straight tree branch) the farthest along a smooth trough made in the snow. Snow Snakes come in various lengths. 

Five Rivers Snow Snake sessions will demonstrate how to prepare the branch for racing by removing twigs, sanding rough spots, decorating. and waxing. Instructional sessions participants will see the race trough and sign up for a race heat on Friday. They will head home with a branch, sandpaper, and wax to use for the creation of their own unique Snow Snake by race day. 

For: Everyone; Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult
Instructional Sessions: 10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 1:00 PM or 2:30 PM (2/16 or 2/17)
Race Heats: 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, or 3:00 PM (2/19)

Where: In person at Five Rivers’ Amphitheater
Fee: members: $15 individual $20 family; non-members: $20 individual $25 family (fee includes materials).

How to Do It: LEARN TO SNOWSHOE
Never tried snowshoeing before? Now is your chance! During this outside program, we'll go over the basics of how to put snowshoes on (and take them off), walk, and turn then we'll put your new skills to work on a short walk. Snowshoe rental fees are waived. This program will be conducted on foot if there is insufficient snow.

THIS PROGRAM IS FULL.

People with bird-watching skills or the desire to learn are needed to help discover winter feeding areas of endangered raptor species. Volunteers meet at Five Rivers once or twice a month and spend an hour, centered around sunset, scanning for and recording raptor species on Five Rivers’ grasslands. Participants do not have to attend every session and will need their own binoculars. Study dates are subject to change due to weather. Pre-registration is required. Where: In person at Five Rivers’ Amphitheater
Fee: members: $15 individual $20 family; non-members: $20 individual $25 family (fee includes materials).

For the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers, and in compliance with guidance from New York State, the New York State Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), social distancing practices must be followed. Masks must be worn throughout guided programs, while at a roving program, and on the trails whenever a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained between individuals or households.

Learn how to bird during wintertime by searching for them at Reinstein Woods. Bring binoculars if you have them.

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

PLEASE NOTE

  • Pre-registration is required for ALL programs; call 716-683-5959 to register for an in-person program. For virtual programs, please register online at www.reinsteinwoods.org/events.
  • You must pre-register by phone; you will receive a call confirming your registration or waitlist status. PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY when leaving your name and phone number as our system does not have caller ID. Unless you receive a callback, you are not registered. *Registration for popular programs is limited to 3 people per party.
  • All participants are required to wear a mask; social distancing of 6 feet or more will be practiced whenever possible. 
  • In case of poor weather, programs may be cancelled.
  • We cannot accommodate organized youth/civic groups at these programs. Please call to make other arrangements.
