The Department has determined that the applications to renew the Title V (Air) and Title IV (Acid Rain) permits for the Greenidge Generating Station (Facility) are complete for the purposes of public review and comment. The Department has prepared draft Title V and Title IV permits, subject to public comment or other information, for the Facility, located in the Town of Dresden, Yates County. The Facility is a primarily natural gas-fired electric generating plant, with a generating capacity of approximately 107 megawatts (MW) with a maximum heat input which is limited to 1,117 million BTUs per hour. While the Department is making a draft Title V and Title IV permit available for public review and comment, the Department has not made a tentative or final determination to issue any final permit for the Facility.

Take part in ongoing research on monarch butterflies. For more than 15 years, we have collected data at Five Rivers and contributed to the University of Minnesota’s continent-wide citizen science project. The goal of the MLMP is to better understand how and why monarch populations vary, with a focus on their distribution and abundance during the breeding season in North America (Canada, Mexico, and United States). For more than 15 years, data collected at Five Rivers has been contributed to this continent-wide citizen science project conducted through the University of Minnesota. You can join volunteers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in conserving monarchs and advancing understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Wear long pants and bring a sun hat and water. We will meet at the visitor center. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn about the project.

Space is limited and registration is required. Call 518-475-0291 by the Saturday prior to register. 

For the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers, and in compliance with guidance from New York State, the New York State Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), social distancing practices must be followed. Masks must be worn throughout guided programs, while at a roving program, and on the trails whenever a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained between individuals or households.

TREE IDENTIFICATION by LEAF MORPHOLOGY

Become a part of a community of learners interested in exploring nature and sharing knowledge! Together we will explore leaf morphology including arrangement, shape, and margins.  Once understood, tree identification becomes a way to identify a variety of trees at Five Rivers. Participants are asked to dress for the weather and bring along water and a snack. Please meet at Five Rivers’ Guided School Program Building.

Notice of Public Comment Period for Chemicals and PQLs under Consideration for Toxic Chemicals in Children's Products Regulations

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) has made lists of Chemicals of Concern and High Priority Chemicals, along with practical quantification limits, currently under review for the Toxic Chemicals in Children's Products rule available for public review and comment.

Background:

Title 9 of Article 37 of the Environmental Conservation Law requires NYS DEC to promulgate lists of Chemicals of Concern and High Priority Chemicals, which will dictate the chemicals that must be disclosed by manufacturers of children's products when present in a product. NSY DEC is considering which chemicals to include on these lists and has published lists for public review and comment.

Xerox Corporation - Webster, NY, Monroe County - Closure Plan for SWMU #67 W343 Drum Storage Area

Notice is hereby given that the Xerox - Webster NY facility (Xerox) (EPA Identification Number NYD002211324) has applied to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) under the provisions of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and 6NYCRR Part 373-2 for closure of a hazardous waste storage unit at the SWMU #67 W343 Drum Storage Area. The SWMU #67 W343 Drum Storage Area closure plan was reviewed by NYS DEC staff and comments were provided to Xerox on August 1, 2021. Xerox responded to NYS DEC comments on August 16, 2021. NYS DEC has tentatively determined that the response to comments by Xerox are acceptable and that the closure plan, inclusive of the responses, is consistent with the regulatory requirements for the closure of a hazardous waste container storage area and, as such, can be conditionally approved. The intention of this public notice is to solicit comment from the public on the SWMU #67 W343 Drum Storage Area closure plan. The applicant's closure plan details the steps that will be taken to close the hazardous waste management unit.

A copy of the closure plan, inclusive of Xerox's response to comments, is available for public review at NYS DEC Central Office.  Comment deadline - Draft Niagara Frontier Unit Management Plan for Public Review

The draft UMP proposes improvements to State lands in Erie and Cattaraugus counties, including the Zoar Valley Unique Area (UA) and Multiple Use Area (MUA). The UMP will guide management of these properties over the next 10 years. The release of the draft UMP complements the recent release of emergency regulations to improve public safety at Zoar Valley and Onondaga Escarpment Unique Area and support DEC's ongoing efforts to improve the visitor experience at Zoar Valley.

DEC will accept official public comments on the draft Niagara Frontier UMP until October 15, 2021. It is not necessary to attend the Virtual Public Meeting to comment on the draft Niagara Frontier UMP. Official comments will not be recorded during the Virtual Public Meeting.

Join DEC for the Fall Family Fishing Festival at Hempstead Lake State Park on Saturday, October 16th from 10am - 4pm.

Free Sport Fishing Events are fishing programs where participants can fish for free; no freshwater fishing license or enrollment in the Recreational Marine Fishing Registry is required. In addition to fishing, participants can learn about fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, fisheries management, angling ethics and aquatic ecology.

Rules for Attending a Free Sport Fishing Clinic During COVID-19

Per CDC guidelines, all unvaccinated individuals present at a DEC- approved free fishing clinic, including participants and volunteers must wear a mask and practice social distancing.

This calendar provides a listing of all DEC-sponsored events that are open to the public. You can click on any event in the calendar to view additional details about the event. Note that the events at environmental education centers will only display in the region in which they are located, even though they serve residents from adjacent areas.
