6:30 PMVirtual Public Meeting: Steps Proposed to Improve Honeoye Water Quality
https://www.dec.ny.gov/press/126201.html
Contact  Andrea Pedrick
Region8@dec.ny.gov
Location  Online / Virtual

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is holding a virtual public information session on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. to update residents on a research project to control phosphorous in Honeoye Lake in the town of Richmond, Ontario County. Phosphorous is a critical nutrient but excess concentrations can result in poor water quality.

DEC is studying potential management actions to control internal lake phosphorus loading from sediments on the floor of the lake. Honeoye Lake is a valued recreational asset, but it is currently impaired due to high phosphorus concentrations, mostly coming from within the lake itself. High phosphorous concentrations can create water quality issues such as reduced water clarity, low dissolved oxygen, fish die-offs, and may lead to harmful or toxic algal blooms (HABs).

The virtual meeting will enable the community to hear from DEC on the steps proposed to improve Honeoye water quality. The meeting can be accessed via WebEx. Individuals without computer access may join the meeting by dialing 518-549-0500 and using the meeting access code: 3322022.

DEC filed an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rule Making (ANPRM) with the New York State Department of State on July 27, 2022. The ANPRM is a data gathering and public outreach exercise intended to inform future reclassification and water quality standard rule makings applicable to saline waters of the State. The ANPRM is not a regulatory action, but an opportunity to gather stakeholder data to inform future regulatory changes, if appropriate.

The public notice of the ANPRM starts a 90-day data solicitation period where stakeholders may submit data to DEC in response to the ANPRM and the questions posed within it. The data solicitation period will close at midnight on October 25, 2022.

DEC plans to hold two public information meetings in support of the ANPRM. These are not hearings, but opportunities for stakeholders to learn about the ANPRM process and ask questions about the data DEC seeks in response to the ANPRM.

Public Information Meeting #2 will be held in-person on September 29, 2022, at 2 p.m. at the DEC Region 2 office.

Date: September 29, 2022
