Kick off the fall season by spending time in the woods! Instead of our typical one-day event, we are holding multiple guided walks and programs this year. See the "Reimagined" Fall Festival for the schedule of events and registration information.

Note about registration: To enable wide participation in these events, there is a limit of 3 registration-required events per person. However, you can request to be added to a waiting list for additional programs.

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

Search for nocturnal animals from beavers to bats on this evening guided walk. For adults and children.

Celebrate the dawn chorus as we monitor the progression of the fall bird migration. Meet in front of the visitor center. After a brief introduction, we’ll head out on the trails. Beginners are always welcome. Binoculars are helpful but not necessary. In case of inclement weather, these programs may be canceled.

Take part in ongoing research on monarch butterflies. For more than 15 years, we have collected data at Five Rivers and contributed to the University of Minnesota’s continent-wide citizen science project. The goal of the MLMP is to better understand how and why monarch populations vary, with a focus on their distribution and abundance during the breeding season in North America (Canada, Mexico, and United States). Go to monarchjointventure.org/mlmp to learn more about the project.

For this program, meet at the pavilion near the main parking lot.

For more than 15 years, data collected at Five Rivers has been contributed to this continent-wide citizen science project conducted through the University of Minnesota. You can join volunteers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in conserving monarchs and advancing understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Wear long pants and bring a sun hat and water. We will meet at the visitor center. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn about the project.

Space is limited and registration is required. Call 518-475-0291 by the Saturday prior to register. 

For the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers, and in compliance with guidance from New York State, the New York State Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), social distancing practices must be followed. Masks must be worn throughout guided programs, while at a roving program, and on the trails whenever a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained between individuals or households.

All other freshwater fishing regulations still apply.

Use NYS Free Fishing Days to:

  • Become an ambassador to the sport; take a friend fishing for the first time.
  • Invite a friend to New York to fish.

Double the fun while celebrating one of New York State’s free fishing weekends by joining us for a caregiver and child catch-and-release fishing clinic. Guides will share information about fishing equipment, techniques, regulations, consumption advisories, and good places to fish. Bring gear if you've got it; we have a limited number of rods and reels available for loan. Bait worms provided.

 Second Annual Long Island Women’s Fishing Expo at Connetquot River State Park

Free event hosted mainly by women, for women. New location with emphasis on fly-fishing—arranged by the  FISH NY program of the DEC in cooperation with Connetquot River State Park Preserve. Activities include, Fly-Fishing Clinic, Fly-Casting Instruction, Basic Knot Tying, Fly-tying Demo, Trout Hatchery Tour, Fisheries Management Info., Advanced Fishing info., and much more.
