DEC invites the public to comment about a proposed remedy to address contamination related to the 26-32 Jackson Avenue Site (Long Island City, Queens), within New York's Brownfield Cleanup Program. Public comments about the proposal will be accepted through September 7, 2020.

Citizen Science: EARLY BIRDERS

Celebrate the dawn chorus as we monitor the progression of fall bird migration. These outdoor surveys begin at 7:30 AM. Meet at the visitor center. After a brief introduction, we’ll head out on the trails. Beginners are always welcome. Binoculars are helpful but not necessary. In case of inclement weather, these programs will be canceled. For more information, call 518-475-0291.

Registration is limited. Please call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 by the Tuesday before the program to register. If registration fills, you may be placed on a waiting list.

For the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers, and in compliance with guidance from New York State, the New York State Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), social distancing practices must be followed. Masks must be worn throughout guided programs, while at a roving program, and on the trails whenever a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained between individuals or households.

Join us online to learn about the styles of feeders and seed types you can use to attract birds to your backyard this winter.

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

PLEASE NOTE

  • Pre-registration is required for ALL programs; call 716-683-5959 to register for an in-person program. For virtual programs, please register online at www.reinsteinwoods.org/events.
  • You must pre-register by phone; you will receive a call confirming your registration or waitlist status. PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY when leaving your phone number as our system does not have caller ID. Unless you receive a callback, you are not registered. 
  • All participants are required to wear a mask; social distancing of 6 feet or more will be practiced whenever possible. 
  • Reinstein Woods’ restrooms will not be available. In case of poor weather, programs may be cancelled. 
  • We cannot accommodate organized youth/civic groups at these programs. Please call to make other arrangements.

DEC has received a Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) application for a site known as Former Friendship House of WNY, site ID #C915360. This site is located in the City of Lackawanna within the County of Erie and is located at 100 Dona Street. Public comments about the application must be submitted by September 11, 2020.

This site is located in the City of Poughkeepsie within the County of Dutchess and is located at 58 Parker Avenue and 164 Garden Street. Public comments about the application and draft work plan must be submitted by September 11, 2020.

Photo Presentation: SEASONS OF FIVE RIVERS

From field to forest, from ponds to flowing waters, Five Rivers' habitats support an unusually wide variety of life within its 450+ acres at the edge of suburbia. Birds, mammals, amphibians, insects, and more await discovery! For DEC's 50th anniversary, nature photographers Scott Stoner and Denise Hackert-Stoner will showcase the beauty and diversity of this beloved place that is such an integral part of the Capital Region.
