Description: Comment End -DEC has released the Draft Division of Materials Management Program Policy 5 - Management of Soils Contaminated with Technologically-Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (DMM-5) for a 60-day public comment period. DMM-5 identifies the process and criteria to be used to evaluate Technologically-Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (TENORM) or fill and provides guidelines to DEC program staff, property owners, project sponsors and the public on how to appropriately handle identified or suspected TENORM material or fill encountered during construction or earthwork projects. Participate in a free Beginner's Fishing Clinic hosted by NYSDEC at Pat Auletta Steeplechase Pier in Brooklyn, Kings County on Tuesday, 9/5 from 12 - 2 PM. In addition to casting a rod and catching fish, participants can learn about fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, fisheries management, angling ethics, aquatic ecology, and more! No freshwater fishing license is required during the event, and all equipment and bait will be provided for free.

Space is limited (first come, first served). Email for more information and weather related updates.

Iron Man Realty LLC Applicant applied for a permit, DEC Project No. 1-4736-08531/00001, pursuant to 6 NYCRR part 661. The project site is located at 175 Dune Road, Westhampton, New York. Applicant seeks to install a four (4) foot wide walkway over a Right-of-Way (ROW) and install a catwalk, ramp and float seaward of mean high water (MHW) in Moneybogue Bay, a subsection of Moriches Bay. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) denied the application by Notice of Permit Denial dated August 19, 2022 and applicant has requested a hearing.

Legislative Public Comment Hearings: A legislative public comment hearing pursuant to 6 NYCRR part 624 to hear and receive unsworn comments from the public was held electronically on July 26, 2023.

Written Public Comments: Written comments concerning Iron Man Realty's permit application will be accepted by e-mail until 5:00 p.m. on September 1, 2023 or by regular mail if postmarked by September 1, 2023.

Issues Conference: Pursuant to 6 NYCRR 624.4(b), a pre-adjudicatory issues conference will be conducted on September 6, 2023 at 9:30 a.m. Persons seeking to participate at the issues conference and the subsequent adjudicatory hearing, must file a petition which must be received at NYS DEC's Office of Hearings and Mediation Services no later than 5:00 p.m. on August 25, 2023. The issues conference may be canceled if no petitions for party status are received.

Adjudicatory Hearing: The adjudicatory hearing is scheduled for September 6, 2023 immediately following the issues conference, or at 9:30 a.m. if the issue conference is canceled, and continuing as necessary. The hearing will be conducted electronically through the Webex electronic webinar platform.

Come celebrate the dawn chorus as we monitor the birds at Five Rivers. This outdoor survey begins at 7:30 AM. Meet outside the visitor center. After a brief introduction, we’ll head out on the trails. Beginners are always welcome. Bring binoculars if you have them. In case of inclement weather, this program will be canceled.

For more than 15 years, data collected at Five Rivers has been contributed to this continent-wide community science project conducted through the University of Minnesota. Join volunteers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in conserving monarchs and advancing the understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Wear long pants and bring a sun hat and water. We will meet at the visitor center. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn about the project.

Join DEC's I FISH NY Program for a free fishing clinic from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM during the annual Riverhead Snapper Fishing Event at the Peconic Riverfront Park in Riverhead, Suffolk County. At this clinic, participants will gain experience in fishing for snapper (bluefish), while learning about fishing equipment and techniques, local fish identification, aquatic ecology, and more! No recreational marine fishing registration is required to participate and all equipment and bait will be provided for free.

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

  • If you call outside of normal business hours, you will receive a call confirming your registration or waitlist status. PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY when leaving your name and phone number as our system does not have caller ID. Unless you receive a callback, you are not registered. 
  • Registration is limited to two programs/month. If you want to sign up for additional programs, you will be added to the waitlist. 
  • In case of poor weather, programs may be cancelled.
  • If you or a family member feels ill, is waiting for COVID test results or have COVID symptoms, please stay at home.
  • We cannot accommodate organized youth/civic groups at these programs. Please call to make other arrangements.

Five Rivers’ newest trail features several different habitats bursting with life as the end of summer nears. We will walk from the visitor center to the end of the Fisher Trail, a round-trip distance of 3 miles. With luck, we will witness the fall hawk migration getting underway.
