The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) filed a Notice of Emergency/Proposed Rulemaking for an amendment to subdivision (i) of section 190.35 and addition of two new subdivisions (j) and (k) to 6 NYCRR section 190.35, pursuant to Environmental Conservation Law, sections 1-0101(3)(b), 3-0301(1)(b), 3-0301(1)(d), 3-0301(2)(m), 9-0105(1) and 9-0105(3)
The emergency/proposed rulemaking will address overuse and protect public health, safety, general welfare and natural resources on the Peekamoose Valley Riparian Corridor by implementing a permit system from May 15th through September 15th of each year while still providing a quality outdoor experience for users.
The Notice of Emergency/Proposed Rulemaking is available in the June 2nd, 2021 issue of the State Register. Public comments will be accepted by the NYS DEC through August 1st, 2021 and should be e-mailed to the contact listed above.

The I FISH NY Program's primary goal is to increase fishing participation and awareness of the outstanding fishing opportunities that New York has to offer. Free Fishing Clinics are family fishing programs where participants can fish for free; no fishing license or enrollment in the Recreational Marine Fishing Registry is required. This is a family program. Children under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult at all times. Drop-offs are not allowed. Younger siblings, children who have not attended camp before, or have aged out of camp are all welcome!

Join a naturalist at this afternoon program for children in grades K–5 and their caregivers. Meet some of the ambassador animals that call the visitor center their home up close. Learn about their characteristics, their adaptations, and how you can help to protect New York State’s wildlife.

Transform any schoolyard into a NYSSLS learning laboratory using nationally recognized Project WILD activities and more. For educators of students in grades K-12. Twelve CTLE hours provided. $25 fee to cover program experiences.

Take part in ongoing research on monarch butterflies. For more than 15 years, we have collected data at Five Rivers and contributed to the University of Minnesota’s continent-wide citizen science project. The goal of the MLMP is to better understand how and why monarch populations vary, with a focus on their distribution and abundance during the breeding season in North America (Canada, Mexico, and United States). For more than 15 years, data collected at Five Rivers has been contributed to this continent-wide citizen science project conducted through the University of Minnesota. You can join volunteers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in conserving monarchs and advancing understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Wear long pants and bring a sun hat and water. We will meet at the visitor center. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn about the project.

For the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers, and in compliance with guidance from New York State, the New York State Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), social distancing practices must be followed. Masks must be worn throughout guided programs, while at a roving program, and on the trails whenever a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained between individuals or households.

Come learn about bugs during this family-friendly activity. We will start with a walk to look and listen for insects and spiders along the trail. We will then learn about bug basics and how important bugs are to life on earth through a series of interactive activities.

Attendees will learn fish identification, local aquatic ecology, casting safety and techniques and fishing regulations. Following an educational introduction about fishing on Long Island, I FISH NY will conduct basic fishing instruction, ecology and stewardship of local aquatic habitats, fish identification, regulations and casting safety and techniques. The I FISH NY program of the DEC will provide instruction, rods, and bait free of charge.
