Join us after school to get some fresh air, stretch your legs, and have fun outdoors. We’ll meet in front of the visitor center to head out on an adventure. Each week will have a different theme and will include time to explore. Come for as many sessions as you’d like, and dress for outdoor activity. For children in grades K–5 and their caregivers.

Join us during the months of June and August for Outdoors Day! Outdoors Day is a free, open-house style event held in conjunction with National Get Outdoors Day. Try a new outdoor activity or introduce your family to old favorites like hiking, archery, paddling, and fishing. Bring the whole family and spend the day having an outdoor adventure! Join us at events across the state throughout the month of June and August to celebrate Outdoors Day 2021, with most activities on Saturday, June 12 celebrating National Outdoors Day. 2021's event are modified to meet COVID-19 guidelines. Visitors will be able to stop by the Nature Exploration Station just inside the main entrance on Hyland Boulevard. Activities for all ages will be available to help introduce visitors to the animals, plants, and habitats at Mt. Loretto. Did you get the camping bug from friends and neighbors this year? If you did, Five Rivers is the place for you. Come talk with experienced staff about equipment and approaches to camping or bring along any of your camping-related questions. This is a great way to decide if camping is for you. 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM -- Ask an Expert: Hiking Safety

Come visit our informational table and pepper a Forest Ranger with questions about hiking and backpack safety, Leave No Trace Principles, and outdoor gear. They will be ready to answer your questions and offer suggestions. This is a drop-in activity, and social distancing will be observed.

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM -- How to Do It: Archery

Interested in archery and never had the opportunity to try? Well, here is your chance. We’ll have an inflatable archery range where you can talk to experts and learn about different equipment and the best techniques. You’ll become a straight shooter in no time. Join a center naturalist as we hike one of Five Rivers’ longer trails. Join DEC’s I Fish NY team and NYS Parks at Gantry Plaza State Park for the season’s first free fishing clinic. The I Fish NY program will be offering free catch-and-release fishing clinics for all ages. Fishing rods will be provided to participants 14 years old and older. Participants younger than 14 must have an adult who is responsible for the rod. Each participant needs a registration ticket regardless of whether or not they are fishing.

Learn about fishing equipment, techniques, regulations, consumption advisories, and good places to fish. Although no Recreational Marine Fishing Registry is required, staff can help participants register for one since its FREE! This calendar provides a listing of all DEC-sponsored events that are open to the public. You can click on any event in the calendar to view additional details about the event. Note that the events at environmental education centers will only display in the region in which they are located, even though they serve residents from adjacent areas.
