Black Birders Week 2023

Early Morning Bird Walk with Outdoor Afro: Albany and Upstate NY

Black Birders Week is an annual event that highlights and increases the visibility of Black nature enthusiasts and birders. This year's theme, Flying Full Circle, focuses on “how Black birders share their joy of birds through a variety of means of expression, history and culture, and community science.” Join Outdoor Afro: Albany and Upstate NY and Five Rivers staff for an early morning bird walk to celebrate Black Birders Week and expand your birding skills. 

Meet at the visitor center at 7:00 AM and be prepared to head out on the trails. Binoculars are available on-site if needed and all are welcome to attend this inclusive event.

1:00 PMBond Act Listening Tour -- Buffalo

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a statewide educational listening tour for the $4.2 billion Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act of 2022. Overwhelmingly approved by voters last fall, the Bond Act prioritizes investments in environmental justice, climate change mitigation, shoreline restoration, flood resilience, water quality, open space land conservation, recreational resources, and green jobs. The tour will provide an opportunity for the public and potential funding applicants to learn more about the Bond Act, and for the community to weigh in on the draft criteria developed to identify potential projects.

The first in-person session will be held May 30 at 1 p.m. at the University at Buffalo Center for Tomorrow - North Campus, 125 Service Center Road, Buffalo. To register, visit https://www.ny.gov/bondact. Additional meetings will be announced soon for Central New York, the Adirondacks, Upper and Lower Hudson Valley, Bronx, Brooklyn, and Long Island. Two virtual sessions will also be held.

Come celebrate the dawn chorus as we monitor the progression of spring bird migration. These outdoor surveys begin at 7:30 AM. Meet outside the visitor center. Water Quality Improvement Projects (WQIP): WQIP funds implementation projects to
improve water quality or aquatic habitat, promote flood risk reduction, restoration, and enhanced flood and climate resiliency, or protect a drinking water source. Eligible project types: 
o wastewater treatment improvement;
o non-agricultural nonpoint source abatement and control;
o vacuum trucks in municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4) areas;
o land acquisition for source water protection;
o salt storage;
o dam safety repair/rehabilitation;
o aquatic connectivity restoration; and
o marine habitat restoration.

New York's Economywide Cap-and-Invest Pre-Proposal Webinar Series

DEC and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) are hosting a pre-proposal webinar series to provide the public an opportunity to learn about the rulemakings under development for the Cap-and-Invest Program in New York State. Read the press release.

This is the first set in a series of webinars to inform the public and encourage written feedback during the initial phase of outreach. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available on the New York Cap-and-Invest website. As New York begins drafting regulations, we are considering California’s existing economywide programs, as well as those operating in Quebec and Washington State. This webinar series will provide the public with a series of questions on topics that DEC and NYSERDA are seeking input. DEC and NYSERDA are interested in hearing what elements of other jurisdictions' regulations would work well in New York, and what improvements or changes may best serve New York.

Participate in a free Beginner's Fishing Clinic hosted by NYSDEC at Kissena Lake, Kissena Park in Queens, Queens County on Thursday, 6/1 from 5 - 7 PM. In addition to casting a rod and catching fish, participants can learn about fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, fisheries management, angling ethics, aquatic ecology, and more! No freshwater fishing license is required during the event, and all equipment and bait will be provided for free.

Help us celebrate Five Rivers’ biodiversity by taking part in a BioBlitz. Our goal is to take inventory of the species of plants, animals, and insects that live at Five Rivers. From June 3-10 you can participate by submitting your observations online via iNaturalist or by joining an organized BioBlitz event. Five Rivers will be hosting themed activities for all ages to enjoy throughout the week so the whole family can get involved.

Saturday, June 3, 8:00 a.m. - Join us for an early morning walk to see and hear what birds we have at Five Rivers, with the help of an expert birder. Beginners are welcome. Bring binoculars if you have them, but we will also have binoculars available to borrow. The walk will last roughly two hours, but feel free to turn back at any time. Meet outside the visitor center at 8:00 am.

DEC, Onondaga County Parks, and Friends of Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery will conduct a free Family Fishing Clinic on Saturday, June 3, from 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM at Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery, located on County Route 321 in Elbridge, Onondaga County.

Participants can learn about fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, aquatic invertebrates, and how to cook and clean fish during four 15-minute instructional sections presented by DEC staff. During the second half of the session the group will spend time fishing in a trout pond.

The event is free, and no fishing license is required to fish during the program. Fishing rods, tackle, bait and educational materials will be provided. The event is catch and release only. Children under age 16 must be supervised.

This calming walk will focus on the forest’s sounds, smells, and sights to promote relaxation while easing anxiety and stress. For adults and children ages 12 and older. 

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

Bring your smartphone and meet in the Visitor Center at 10:30 am.
