Spring is a great season for the many migrating animals of the Hudson Valley...including eels! Join our DEC educators from Norrie Point Environmental Center, where they will talk about The Hudson River Eel Project, and the data they collect daily on juvenile "glass eels" in Hudson River tributaries.

We’ll begin with a brief socially distanced talk about the American woodcock and its management at Five Rivers. Then we’ll stroll out along the Service Loop through managed areas and feeding swales to watch and listen for woodcock. Bring binoculars if you have them. Carry a flashlight and dress appropriately for the weather.

For the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers, and in compliance with guidance from New York State, the New York State Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), social distancing practices must be followed. Masks must be worn throughout guided programs, while at a roving program, and on the trails whenever a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained between individuals or households.

Together, kids and their parents or caregivers can enjoy a fun hour-long outdoor activity. For children in grades K-5.

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

PLEASE NOTE

  • Pre-registration is required for ALL programs; call 716-683-5959 to register for an in-person program. For virtual programs, please register online at www.reinsteinwoods.org/events.
  • You must pre-register by phone; you will receive a call confirming your registration or waitlist status. PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY when leaving your name and phone number as our system does not have caller ID. Unless you receive a callback, you are not registered. *Registration for popular programs is limited to 3 people per party.
  • All participants are required to wear a mask; social distancing of 6 feet or more will be practiced whenever possible. 
  • In case of poor weather, programs may be cancelled.
  • We cannot accommodate organized youth/civic groups at these programs. Please call to make other arrangements.

As Earth Day approaches, are you looking for ways to live more sustainably? Want to cut back on your use of fossil fuels? Join these lunchtime sessions to help you get started.  You can register for one or all of the sessions.

Join us after school to get some fresh air, stretch your legs, and have fun outdoors. We’ll meet in front of the visitor center to head out on an adventure. Each week will have a different theme and will include time to explore. Come for as many sessions as you’d like, and dress for outdoor activity. For children in grades K–5 and their caregivers.

DEC invites the public to comment about a proposal to address contamination related to the Rockfarmer 37th Avenue, site ID #C241212 (Jackson Heights, Queens County) within New York's Brownfield Cleanup Program. Public comments about the proposal will be accepted through April 17, 2021.

Enjoy the outdoors at the place to be in spring! We will watch for birds that are returning to breed at Five Rivers. We may also see birds who are passing through with miles to go before they reach their northern nesting grounds. Bring binoculars if you have them.

The hunt is a two-day event that starts with an educational portion at the Massena Rod and Gun Club at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 17th, followed by a hunt day on Saturday, April 24.

Become a nature detective and look for “clues” left by wildlife along the trails. For children ages 6-10.

Find out what Mother Nature is doing during spring along Beaver Tree Trail. There are lots of interesting things to see, hear, touch, and smell. Join a naturalist and answer the question, “How many peepers can you peep at?”
