DEC has received a Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) application and Draft Remedial Action Work Plan for a site known as the Former Sears Auto Center Site, site ID #C203147. This site is located in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx, and is located at 4720 Third Avenue, 4734 Third Avenue and 448 East 189th Street. Public comments about the application and draft work plan must be submitted by July 31, 2021.

DEC today encouraged the public to comment on the draft update to the Five Streams Unit Management Plan (UMP), that includes three state forests in Chenango County. The updated UMP will guide management of these properties over the next 10 years. DEC will accept comments on the draft plan until Saturday, July 31.

The Five Streams Unit covers 9,634 acres of state lands in Chenango County, including Five StreamsBalsam Swamp, and Red Brook State Forests.

Highlights of the plan include:
  • continuing routine maintenance of Balsam Pond campground; 
  • developing a loop trail around Balsam Pond and renovating Balsam Pond dam;
  • maintaining a trail offering motorized access for visitors with mobility impairments; 
  • installing trail map kiosks; 
  • partnering with snowmobile clubs to provide over 15 miles of snowmobile trails; and 
  • implementing sustainable practices for forest management.

Learn how to identify birds by their calls while on a hike at Reinstein Woods. Bring binoculars if you have them. 

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

  • You must pre-register by phone; you will receive a call confirming your registration or waitlist status. PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY when leaving your name and phone number as our system does not have caller ID. Unless you receive a callback, you are not registered. *Registration for popular programs is limited to 3 people per party.
  • All participants are required to wear a mask; social distancing of 6 feet or more will be practiced whenever possible. 
  • In case of poor weather, programs may be cancelled.
  • We cannot accommodate organized youth/civic groups at these programs. Please call to make other arrangements.

The 10th annual Great Hudson River Estuary Fish Count will take place at multiple sites along the banks and piers of the Hudson River on Saturday, July 31st. 

The public is invited to join naturalists from the Capital Region to New York City to explore the variety of creatures usually hidden below the river’s surface. A list of participating public and virtual sites is available on the Great Hudson River Estuary Fish Count webpage on DEC’s website.

Hop on the free Nature Bus in Albany every Saturday to enjoy scenic outdoor walks or programs at Five Rivers and other natural areas in Albany County. Stay for the day or visit multiple locations along the bus route.

Who’s living in the pond? We’ll seek out some wildlife and discover how they survive in this aquatic world. Program geared towards children ages 5–10, but siblings are welcome.

Join DEC Summer Staff to learn fishing basics. You will then have a chance to practice your skills in a scenic location!

About this event

The I FISH NY Program's primary goal is to increase fishing participation and awareness of the outstanding fishing opportunities that New York has to offer. Free Fishing Clinics are family fishing programs where participants can fish for free; no fishing license or enrollment in the Recreational Marine Fishing Registry is required. Please register only if you plan on attending. While spaces are limited at each event, there are many events to choose from throughout the summer!

This is a family program. Children under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult at all times. Drop-offs are not allowed. Younger siblings, children who have not attended camp before, or have aged out of camp are all welcome!
