DEC designates several dates throughout the year as free fishing days, which allows anyone to recreationally fish without a fishing license in New York State! Saturday, September 23, 2023 is a designated free fishing day for National Hunting and Fishing Day. This offers the perfect opportunity to try out fishing for the first time, for getting back into the sport after taking a break, or for taking a friend or the whole family along to fish!

Even though a license is not needed, all fishing regulations apply. As a result, be sure to familiarize yourself with the Freshwater Fishing Regulations or Saltwater Fishing Regulations prior to venturing out.

Don't forget to download and use the Tacklebox feature in DEC's HuntFishNY mobile app to find places to fish, including boat launches and parking areas, as well as freshwater fishing regulations, likely fish species, and stocking information per waterbody!

Salmon River Fish Hatchery’s 24th Annual Open House

Location: Salmon River Fish Hatchery, 2133 County Route 22, Altmar, NY 13302

Come celebrate National Hunting & Fishing Day at the Salmon River Fish Hatchery’s 24th Annual Open House on Saturday, 23 Sept., from 9 AM to 3 PM. The Salmon River Hatchery open house provides visitors with a unique peek behind the scenes at how DEC helps bolster the world-class salmon and trout fisheries in Lake Ontario and its tributaries, including the renowned Salmon River.

DEC will lead tours of the facility between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., providing the public with rare behind-the-scenes access to the hatchery's inner-workings. Visit the recently redesigned fish observation deck, which offers new and improved views of salmon as they migrate. Attendees can observe New York fish in the hatchery's aquaria and learn about rare and threatened fish species in New York State. In addition, kids can learn how to cast a fishing rod.

To complement scheduled program events, several conservation organizations, fishing and hunting clubs, and outdoor recreation groups will be on hand with displays and activities to provide information about their role in the Salmon River Corridor and the Lake Ontario ecosystem.

Find additional information on DEC's website.
