Five Rivers BioBlitz, June 3-10

Help us celebrate Five Rivers’ biodiversity by taking part in a BioBlitz. Our goal is to take inventory of the species of plants, animals, and insects that live at Five Rivers. From June 3-10 you can participate by submitting your observations online via iNaturalist or by joining an organized BioBlitz event. Five Rivers will be hosting themed activities for all ages to enjoy throughout the week so the whole family can get involved.

Saturday, June 3, 8:00 a.m. - Join us for an early morning walk to see and hear what birds we have at Five Rivers, with the help of an expert birder. Beginners are welcome. Bring binoculars if you have them, but we will also have binoculars available to borrow. The walk will last roughly two hours, but feel free to turn back at any time. Meet outside the visitor center at 8:00 am.

Please call 518-475-0291 to register. Everyone is welcome, regardless of knowledge or experience. You will be contacted in the event of a weather-related cancellation.

DEC, Onondaga County Parks, and Friends of Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery will conduct a free Family Fishing Clinic on Saturday, June 3, from 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM at Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery, located on County Route 321 in Elbridge, Onondaga County.

Participants can learn about fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, aquatic invertebrates, and how to cook and clean fish during four 15-minute instructional sections presented by DEC staff. During the second half of the session the group will spend time fishing in a trout pond.

The event is free, and no fishing license is required to fish during the program. Fishing rods, tackle, bait and educational materials will be provided. The event is catch and release only. Children under age 16 must be supervised.

This calming walk will focus on the forest’s sounds, smells, and sights to promote relaxation while easing anxiety and stress. For adults and children ages 12 and older. 

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

PLEASE NOTE

  • Registration is required for ALL programs unless otherwise indicated; call 716-683-5959 to register. 
  • If you call outside of normal business hours, you will receive a call confirming your registration or waitlist status. PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY when leaving your name and phone number as our system does not have caller ID. Unless you receive a callback, you are not registered. 
  • Registration is limited to two programs/month. If you want to sign up for additional programs, you will be added to the waitlist. 
  • In case of poor weather, programs may be cancelled.
  • If you or a family member feels ill, is waiting for COVID test results or have COVID symptoms, please stay at home.
  • We cannot accommodate organized youth/civic groups at these programs. Please call to make other arrangements.

June 3, 10:30 am - iNaturalist for Community Science: An Orientation – iNaturalist is a free downloadable app that can be used to identify observations and report them to an international community science database. This orientation will be an introduction to this useful app, and how you can use it to report findings for the Five Rivers BioBlitz. Bring your smartphone and meet in the Visitor Center at 10:30 am.

Saturday, June 3, 1:00 p.m. - Insect Netting – Explore the world of insects! Join us for a few hours spent catching, identifying, and releasing insects. We will use magnifying lenses to learn about critters up close, and we can report our findings to iNaturalist. Beginners are welcome.
