Public Comment End: Draft Recreation Management Plan (RMP) -- South Colton Tract Conservation Easement

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is seeking public input to develop a draft recreation management plan (RMP) for the South Colton Tract Conservation Easement. For an overview of the South Colton Tract, please view this fact sheet for the property. Under the terms of the conservation easement, DEC owns the rights to maintain roads and trails for motorized use on the property and to permit public hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, paddling, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. Specific facilities and recreation opportunities will be identified in the draft RMP.

DEC is encouraging the public to share suggestions until April 21, 2023. Please provide suggestions to Peter D'Luhosch; Environmental Program Specialist, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, 190 Outer Main St. Suite 103, Potsdam, NY 13676; or email r6.ump@dec.ny.gov; or by completing this survey.

DEC Seeks Public Input on Draft Amendment to Sundown Wild Forest Unit Management Plan
Proposed Plan Improves Access to Recreation and Protects the Resource

Comment end: April 21, 2023

Background

DEC announced that it is seeking public comment on an amendment to the proposed Sundown Wild Forest Unit Management Plan (UMP). The proposed amendment aims to improve infrastructure, increase public safety, enhance natural resource protection, and improve visitor experiences in the Peekamoose Valley Riparian Corridor.

The Corridor encompasses 275 acres of Forest Preserve land in the approximately 30,000-acre Sundown Wild Forest. This amendment builds upon DEC's previous efforts to encourage sustainable recreation by alleviating congestion at points of interest, enhancing public safety, and creating an experience that highlights the area's natural beauty. In addition, the plan proposes changes to the 2019 Long Path reroute. After further evaluation of local forest characteristics, constructing a trail to accommodate the use of snowmobiles on that segment has been removed.

Read the press release on DEC's website for details of what the draft UMP amendment includes.

View the draft amendmenton the Sundown Wild Forest webpage. Public comments will be accepted through April 21, 2023 and can be submitted by email to r3.ump@dec.ny.gov
