Come help celebrate the continuing recovery of lake sturgeon during the annual stocking event held at the Port of Rochester Marina. Each October, DEC's Oneida Fish Hatchery and Genoa National Fish Hatchery in Wisconsin stock lake sturgeon into the tributaries of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River as part of an ongoing effort to recover populations of these state-threatened fish. At this event, you can view live sturgeon up close and ask questions of educators and scientists from DEC, New York Sea Grant, and other partners about this unique fish.

Address/Location: Port of Rochester Marina, 1000 N. River Street, Rochester, NY 14612

Pond Life: The history and health, as told by flora, fauna, and water quality

Nearly every walk at Five Rivers passes by one of the 14 beautiful ponds located on the property. Have you ever wondered about the history of these ponds and whether they are healthy? Join a community of adult learners as we discover the answers! Each week as we walk out to a different pond we’ll discuss its construction, purpose, and age. Then we’ll investigate its health by sampling the aquatic life and testing the water quality. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy walking shoes that can get muddy, and bring drinking water. Please meet at Five Rivers’ Guided School Program Building, located by the gardens.

Space is limited; registration required.

Dates: Wednesdays, October 5, 12, and 19 (rain date: October 26); Time: 1:30–3:30 PM

Fee: $25 for members; $30 for non-members

Registration: online at, under the “Education Programs” tab

Registration Deadline: Wednesday, September 28
