New York State’s Foam Ban goes into effect January 1, 2022.

Banned Items: Items banned from sale or distribution in New York State include single-use expanded polystyrene foam food service containers used for prepared food and beverages, including but not limited to: bowls, cartons, clamshells, cups, lids, plates, and trays; and Packing peanuts or other void-filling, loose fill packaging products made of expanded polystyrene foam.
 
Affected Businesses and Organizations:

Covered food service providers: Any person selling or distributing prepared food or beverages, including but not limited to: restaurants, grocery stores, delis, coffee shops, caterers, food trucks and street vendors, hospitals, schools, adult care facilities and nursing homes, cafeterias, hotels, motels and inns, community meal programs, sporting venues, amusement parks, summer camps, correctional facilities, and faith-based organizations.

Stores (retail and wholesale) that sell or distribute single-use food service containers or loose fill packaging in New York State.

Loose fill manufacturers who sell or distribute polystyrene foam loose fill in New York State.

Alternatives: Any container or packaging that does not contain expanded polystyrene foam, such as aluminum, rigid plastics, paper, glass, bio-based, and compostable items, may be used as an alternative.

Exemptions & Waivers: Containers used for raw meat, pork, seafood, poultry, or fish sold to be prepared by the customer; Prepackaged food that is filled or sealed prior to receipt at a covered food service provider; Hard plastic food service containers marked with a number 6 (Polystyrene–PS) that are not foam; A city with a population of 1 million or more with a local expanded polystyrene foam ban in place (New York City). Join local bird experts from the Hudson Mohawk Bird Club for our 41st annual New Year’s Day bird count. Over the decades, more than 70 different species have been found at Five Rivers on this day, and the birds found during this long-term study show interesting range changes for many species. Bring binoculars if you have them. Dress warmly.

If severe weather is forecast, call on Friday, December 31, to confirm the event will be held.

Ring in New Year’s Day with a hike led by a DEC Forest Ranger, who will discuss how to prepare for any outdoor adventure. 

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

  • If you call outside of normal business hours, you will receive a call confirming your registration or waitlist status. PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY when leaving your name and phone number as our system does not have caller ID. Unless you receive a callback, you are not registered. 
  • Social distancing and mask protocols are subject to change with current COVID guidelines.
  • In case of poor weather, programs may be cancelled.
  • We cannot accommodate organized youth/civic groups at these programs. Please call to make other arrangements.

Happy New Year! Start the year on the right foot with some outdoor fun. We’ll stretch our legs and clear our heads on two easy-paced guided walks for all ages. The morning walk will cover about three-quarters of a mile, while the afternoon walk will cover about one and a half miles. Dress for the weather.

Space is limited for both guided walks. Call 518-475-0291 by Wednesday, December 29, to register.

 In the event of severe weather, these programs will be canceled.
