Join us during the months of June and August for Outdoors Day! Outdoors Day is a free, open-house style event held in conjunction with National Get Outdoors Day. Try a new outdoor activity or introduce your family to old favorites like hiking, archery, paddling, and fishing. Bring the whole family and spend the day having an outdoor adventure! Join us at events across the state throughout the month of June and August to celebrate Outdoors Day 2021, with most activities on Saturday, June 12 celebrating National Outdoors Day. Find more details and registration information on the event website. 

2021's event are modified to meet COVID-19 guidelines. Social distancing practices must be followed and masks must be worn throughout guided programs, while at a roving program, and on the trails whenever a 6-foot distance cannot be maintained between individuals or households. Some events may have registration requirements to attend. Don't forget to share your photos using #OutdoorsDayNY!

10:00 AM - Geocaching at Billy Wilson Park

Learn how to use a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit and use handheld GPS units to find hidden geocaches. For adults and children ages 8 and older. Note: This program takes place at Billy Wilson Park, Amherst. Pre-registration required; call 716-683-5959.


11:00 AM - Plant ID Skills

Learn tips for identifying local plants and how to use field guides. For adults and children ages 10 and older. Pre-registration required; call 716-683-5959.


1:00 PM - Birding for Kids

Discover how to use binoculars and basic bird identification techniques. For children ages 8 and older. Pre-registration required; call 716-683-5959.

We welcome those who have any type of physical challenge to all our programs. If you call ahead to let us know your needs, we will be happy to learn how we can serve you.

  • Pre-registration is required for ALL programs; call 716-683-5959 to register for an in-person program. For virtual programs, please register online at www.reinsteinwoods.org/events.
  • You must pre-register by phone; you will receive a call confirming your registration or waitlist status. PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY when leaving your name and phone number as our system does not have caller ID. Unless you receive a callback, you are not registered. *Registration for popular programs is limited to 3 people per party.
  • All participants are required to wear a mask; social distancing of 6 feet or more will be practiced whenever possible. 
  • In case of poor weather, programs may be cancelled.
  • We cannot accommodate organized youth/civic groups at these programs. Please call to make other arrangements.

Join DEC’s Education team at Mount Loretto Unique Area on Staten Island for Outdoors Day!

Visitors will be able to stop by the Nature Exploration Station just inside the main entrance on Hyland Boulevard. Activities for all ages will be available to help introduce visitors to the animals, plants, and habitats at Mt. Loretto. Visitors will also be able to sign out binoculars and field guides to use during their walk.

Five Rivers celebrates Outdoors Day today with a variety of activities. Call ahead to register for Learn to Camp, Archery or a guided walk along the Wild Turkey Trail, or drop in and explore the trails at your own pace.

10:00 - 11:30 AM -- How to Do It: Learn to Camp

Did you get the camping bug from friends and neighbors this year? If you did, Five Rivers is the place for you. Come talk with experienced staff about equipment and approaches to camping or bring along any of your camping-related questions. This is a great way to decide if camping is for you. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 518-475-0291 by Wednesday, June 9, to register.

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM -- Ask an Expert: Hiking Safety

Come visit our informational table and pepper a Forest Ranger with questions about hiking and backpack safety, Leave No Trace Principles, and outdoor gear. They will be ready to answer your questions and offer suggestions. This is a drop-in activity, and social distancing will be observed.

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM -- How to Do It: Archery

Interested in archery and never had the opportunity to try? Well, here is your chance. We’ll have an inflatable archery range where you can talk to experts and learn about different equipment and the best techniques. You’ll become a straight shooter in no time. Space is limited and registration is required. Registration is for 15-minute slots. Call 518-475-0291 by Wednesday, June 9, to register.

2:00 - 3:30 PM -- Guided Hike: Wild Turkey Trail

Join a center naturalist as we hike one of Five Rivers’ longer trails. Enjoy the scenery and look for grassland species as you learn about what to bring with you on a hike around town or in the forest preserve. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 518-475-0291 by Wednesday, June 9, to register.

Join DEC’s I Fish NY team and NYS Parks at Gantry Plaza State Park for the season’s first free fishing clinic. The I Fish NY program will be offering free catch-and-release fishing clinics for all ages. Fishing rods will be provided to participants 14 years old and older. Participants younger than 14 must have an adult who is responsible for the rod. Each participant needs a registration ticket regardless of whether or not they are fishing.

Learn about fishing equipment, techniques, regulations, consumption advisories, and good places to fish. Although no Recreational Marine Fishing Registry is required, staff can help participants register for one since its FREE! In addition to fishing, participants can learn about fish identification, fishing equipment and techniques, fisheries management, angling ethics and aquatic ecology. Due to COVID-19 there are new safety guidelines for free fishing events found here: https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/89811.html
