Join DEC Educator Betsy Ukeritis as she talks with two Seneca Park Zoo Society Urban Ecologists. These high school youth are part of a workforce development program for youth between the City of Rochester’s Summer of Opportunity program and the Seneca Park Zoo Society. During this LIVE, we will learn about the program and then take a look at snowball making—types of snow, what gloves work best for snowball formation, and maybe show off a couple fun snowball games families can play this winter.

Snow Snake is a traditional Haudenosaunee game played during the winter. The object of the game is to throw your Snow Snake (a straight tree branch) the farthest along a smooth trough made in the snow. Snow Snakes come in various lengths.

Five Rivers Snow Snake sessions will demonstrate how to prepare the branch for racing by removing twigs, sanding rough spots, decorating. and waxing. Instructional sessions participants will see the race trough and sign up for a race heat on Friday. They will head home with a branch, sandpaper, and wax to use for the creation of their own unique Snow Snake by race day.
