National Marine Sanctuary designation process for Eastern Lake Ontario includes Opportunities for Public Comments

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is initiating a process to consider designating a portion of eastern Lake Ontario in New York as a national marine sanctuary. The designation will protect historically significant shipwrecks and maritime heritage resources. Local communities in the region nominated the area for designation in accordance with section 304(a) of the National Marine Sanctuaries Act, as amended, (NMSA), based on the area's qualities and boundaries.

The process of designating this area will follow the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and includes opportunities for public comment. Public Meetings will be held as follows:
• June 10, 2019 at Fair Haven Fire Hall at 14447 Fair Haven Rd., Sterling, NY 13156 from 6:30 to 8:30pm
• June 11, 2019 at Emergency Operations Center located at 7376 Route 31, Lyons, NY 14489, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm
• June 12, 2019 at the Lake Ontario Conference Center; 26 East 1st St., Oswego, NY 13126 From 6:30 to 8:00 pm
• June 13, 2019 at Jefferson Community College 1220 Coffeen St., Jules Center, Room 6-002, Watertown, NY 13601 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm
