Rainbow Darter

Rainbow Darter

Etheostoma caeruleum

The Rainbow Darter resides in streams with clean gravel and riffles. It is native to the three western NY watersheds, where it is abundant. In tributaries of Lake Ontario its native range extends only as far east as Rochester. It was introduced and is becoming more widespread in the Genesee watershed and, more recently, in Schoharie Creek of the Mohawk watershed.
