Blackside Darter

Blackside Darter

Percina maculata

Blackside Darter lives in shallow streams that are cool and usually in areas over a hard bottom. It is widespread in the western New York watersheds but in the Ontario watershed its range extends only as far east as Rochester. In the Oswego watershed it occurs along the corridor now occupied by the Barge Canal. There is a cluster to the west and south near Rochester and another one around Oneida Lake. It remains relatively abundant in these watersheds.
