Coregonus hoyi

Image of a Bloater fish

Bloater was present in Lake Ontario at depths over 100 feet until 1983. By 1942, the "cisco" commercial fishery in Lake Ontario was dominated by bloater. By this time, other species had been overfished. Because of bloater's early maturity, it was able to reproduce before entering the fishery. The "cisco" fishery in the lake was gone by 1960. A program to restore this extirpated species with stocking began in 2012.
