Wildland Fire Management

NYSDEC Forest Ranger logoThis website provides information about wildland fire management; a vital element of protecting our lands for future generations. New York has a vast landscape of public and private forest lands that are susceptible to seasonal wildfires. Wildland fire management is much more than simple fire suppression. It encompasses many management projects and collaboration with many other agencies and programs, including:

- developing and implementing statewide and regional fire plans

- assessing and developing wildland fire training and equipment needs

- developing and implementing fire prevention and education programs

- developing and maintaining wildland fire weather and predictive services programs

- working with the Northeast Forest Fire Protection Compact (NFFPC), USDA Forest Service, National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) and other wildland fire agencies to implement strategies and agreements for better interstate and intrastate cooperation in areas of training, information exchange, and sharing equipment and qualified personnel during wildland fire emergencies.

Did you know?

In the last exceptionally dry fire season of 2002, Forest Rangers responded to 324 wildfires throughout the state, burning a total of 2,062 acres. In historical contrast, the similarly dry weather of 1903 spawned over 643 fires which burned 464,000 acres in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks alone. The difference from 1903 to 2002 is a direct result of 100 years of Forest Ranger efforts, working to prevent wildfires and improve fire control response.
