K-9 Unit Equipment
Equipment Used By K-9 Handlers
Each Environmental Conservation Officer K-9 Handler is issued special equipment in order to do their jobs as efficiently and as effectively as possible. The equipment needs of a K-9 Handler differ from other officers because of their K-9 partner.
The following K-9 equipment is issued to each officer:
- One full-size sport utility vehicle with four-wheel drive and air conditioning
- One GPS (global positioning system)
- One chain link type kennel and dog house at each officer's home for use only in emergency situations or for short time periods
- Two sets of stainless steel food and water dishes, one for home and one set for in the K-9 vehicle
- Padded attack training sleeve and an attack sleeve designed to be worn under a jacket or old shirt
- Wide leather aggression collar, usually used for building searches
- Cage dividers with moving doors for the K-9 vehicle
- Carpet in the rear portion of the K-9 vehicle where the dog rides
Other items include: a tracking harness, a 15' or 30' tracking lead, chain training collars, 6' police leads, short 24" traffic leads, kong balls, equipment duffel bags and day packs, plastic water bottles, and compasses. The dogs are all fed top quality dog food and they are groomed daily.
