How To Become a K-9 Handler
How To Become a K-9 Handler
K-9 Handlers are selected by, but not limited to, the following conditions:
- Seniority (with at least three years as an Environmental Conservation Officer)
- The need for dog placement in a geographical location within one of NY state's nine regions
- Past performance rating
- Physical condition
- The officer must not be involved in any other specialized training or duty assignments
The DEC K-9 instructor interviews the families and neighbors of perspective handlers and a psychological test is also given to perspective dog handlers. Once an ECO is accepted as a Detector Dog Handler, he or she must complete a sixteen week Basic K-9 Academy. The Environmental Conservation Officers that become K-9 Handlers must take on extra work and responsibility. These officers are still required to answer complaints, conduct investigations, and completely cover law enforcement in their assigned sector. Also, each dog handler must live carefully by the policy handbook, guiding them in the proper use of the dogs, their training, care, and procedures. Strict policy, dedicated K-9 Handlers, competent supervision, and the full backing from the administration guarantees us a professional unit.
Locating dogs for the program
K-9 Hunter The DEC K-9 instructor is also responsible for locating and evaluating possible donated male German Shepherd dogs for the program. This requires time and travel, as not all offers are good prospects. Sometimes only one dog in ten is accepted for future training. Male German Shepherds, between one and three years old that are well socialized and in good physical condition with erect ears and good prey drive are prime candidates for the program. Potential dogs are X-rayed to check for possible hip or elbow problems before training. Dogs which are overly aggressive are not accepted.
