Fish, Wildlife and Marine Resources Information For Small Businesses

Fish and wildlife are valued natural resources, which generate many jobs and dollars for the New York economy.

Regulated hunting and trapping also manage wildlife populations to reduce crop and environmental damage. The Department regulates businesses offering wildlife control services.

Division programs and regulations ensure that use of these resources are sustainable and will continue to benefit future generations. Regulations protect fish and wildlife populations and the public health, safety, and welfare.

New York hunters and anglers annually spend millions of dollars for goods and services provided by businesses located throughout the state. These expenditures support jobs, generate sales and income taxes, and are an integral component of the tourism industry in several upstate communities.

Recreational anglers and hunters spent more than $2.5 billion in pursuit of their pastimes in New York in 1996, according to a federal survey documenting the economic importance of hunting and fishing.

Hunter and angler expenditures include equipment, bait and tackle, hotels and motels, restaurants, lodges and camps, grocery and hardware stores, and guide services. The survey found that these expenditures and their associated economic impact supported 43,000 jobs and generated $100 million in State sales tax and $32 million in State income tax in New York State in 1996.
