On Memorial Day Weekend a few years ago, we took our first trip of the year to our favorite Adirondack lake. As we were canoeing to our campsite, we wondered how the loons we watched the previous year had fared through the winter. We felt a kinship with these loons, as we had watched them raise a chick from a fluffy ball of down to a full-sized adolescent. We were eager to see our old friends, and had high hopes of watching them raise another family.
