Please join us for this special program on wilderness survival skills, conducted by Master Scout, Shane Whitefeather of the Mountain Scout Survival School. Participants will learn the basics of survival skills that have been honed for centuries by native people of this region in this special half-day course. Shane Whitefeather will teach primitive skills including how to start fires without matches, animal tracking, wilderness shelter building, making cordage from bark and other fibers, and more.
An outdoor guide licensed by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Shane developed his wilderness skills under the teaching of Tom Brown Jr. and Stalking Wolf. Shane applies his knowledge and experience to his work as an educator at the Mountain Scout Survival School and trains members of law enforcement and the military in tracking. He is also one of five members in the United States of Tom Brown Jr's Tracker Search and Forensic Investigation Team. Shane was recently highlighted in The New Yorker and was involved in filming a segment for History Channel's Monster Quest, airing this summer. Call 845-831-8780, ext. 300.

The technique of aging deer by dentition revolutionized the profession of wildlife management, and was invented right here in Delmar. Age data gathered at deer check stations in the fall give biologists a reliable "snapshot" of local populations and are used to adjust the following year's harvest goals. At this indoor workshop, Center staff will demonstrate how to age deer based on tooth growth and wear. Then participants will practice their skill using jaw bones from the Center's collection. The Siting Plan is intended to guide state agencies, authorities and other entities, to make decisions regarding the management and disposal of hazardous waste, so as to avoid potentially adverse impacts to air, land, water or public health. The draft GEIS evaluates and addresses any potential impacts the draft plan may have on the environment. However, it does not replace the need for a separate and distinct site-specific EIS for any hazardous waste management facility that is proposed to be sited or expanded in New York State in the future.
Both the draft GEIS and Siting Plan are available in electronic format on the DEC website. The revised drafts incorporate the input received during the previous hearings and comment period and are subject to a second and final opportunity for public comment before finalization.
All persons, organizations, corporations, government agencies, and others wishing to comment on the proposed Siting Plan are invited to attend the hearings and to submit either written or oral statements. Reasonable time limits may be set for each speaker to afford everyone an opportunity to be heard. Lengthy statements should be submitted in writing and summarized for oral presentation. Written statements received prior to the close of the public comment period and oral statements made at each hearing session will be given equal weight.
Written comments will also be accepted if received by the close of business on December 14, 2009. Comments can be sent to John Iannotti, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Solid and Hazardous Materials, 625 Broadway, Albany, New York 12233-7250.
