Note that the events at environmental education centers will only display in the region in which they are located, even though they serve residents from adjacent areas. The former manufactured gas plant on Transit Street in Lockport contaminated soil and groundwater at the site and surrounding area due to its production of coal gas. The DEC has proposed a plan, called the Proposed Remedial Action Plan (PRAP) to clean up the site. Comments on the plan may be submitted from February 26 until March 28, 2009. A public meeting will be held to explain proposed cleanup measures and offer the public the opportunity to ask questions. You are invited to attend a public meeting on May 6, 2009, in the Conference Room of the DEC Office in Bath, NY. Two different style sessions will be held on May 6. An informational open house will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon. Display stations will be set up and committee members will be available for discussion and comments. A half-hour presentation on the draft plan will begin at 7:00 pm, followed by a question and answer period. Displays and staff will be available until 9:00 pm. The public is invited to submit comments on the proposed plan until COB June 5, 2009.

This new offering from Project WILD is an exciting new nature-based early childhood program. The materials are designed to connect children to nature through developmentally-appropriate practices and a direct contact with the natural world through field investigations. Each activity has a "Take Me Outside" and "Home Connections" box along with math and literacy connections, art projects, and music and movement opportunities. A CD of music and songs is included. Activities are correlated to the Head Start Domains and Indicators and the National Association for the Education of Young Children standards.

Our Annual Camp Out here at the Center is a gentle and safe way to introduce your family to tent camping. You provide Friday supper, we provide Saturday breakfast and lots of experiences, including a nature walk and a campfire. We have a few tents and sleeping bags to loan. Registration by Monday, August 17, is necessary.
There is a $15.00 per family materials fee; $10.00 per family materials fee for Friends of Five Rivers members.
