Olin Corporation - Niagara Falls, Niagara County
Olin Corporation, located in Niagara Falls and employing 175 people, is a chlor-alkali manufacturing facility. This facility liquefies chlorine gas produced by the electrolysis of sodium chloride. A portion of the chlorine gas stream, composed of inert gases that cannot be liquefied, is commonly known as "tailgas." By modifying the process operation, Olin was able to recover and recycle the by-products generated from the tailgas scrubbing. This process eliminated a 16,500-gallon per day discharge of a brine/carbonate waste stream to the City of Niagara Falls wastewater treatment facility. The total cost of the project was $6.5 million.
Large Business
Dresser-Rand - Olean, Cattaraugus County
Dresser-Rand Olean Operations, employing over 1,400 people, is a manufacturer of multistage and pipeline centrifugal compressors, power turbine and gas turbine packages, and hot gas expanders. These products are primarily used in applications such as oil and natural gas production, transmission, and refining. By applying best management practices, initiating maintenance programs, and substituting chemical processes that contributed to the hazardous waste inventory, Dresser-Rand reduced its hazardous waste generation by 95 percent and attained qualification as a small quantity generator. Dresser-Rand estimates they will save 50 cents for every pound of hazardous waste reduced, with the savings being cumulative over the years.

The total projected cost associated with this program was approximately $5 million with the internal rate of return for the first phase of the program estimated at $4 million. The second phase of the project will reduce manufacturing costs an additional $3 million annually.

New York State Office of Mental Health
The Office of Mental Health (OMH) is a New York State government agency with 30 locations across the state. Through a commitment to energy efficiency, OMH has successfully reduced its overall energy consumption by more than 56 percent. Nearly 25 trillion BTUs of raw energy have been preserved, which translates into atmospheric reductions of 4,850 tons of nitrous oxides (NOx), 6,619 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and 2,417,876 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). This reduction in carbon dioxide alone is equivalent to the emissions reduction gained by permanently removing 75,000 cars from the streets and highways of New York State.
