Small Business

AA Dairy
This is a 550 cow dairy operation in Candor with a 2,200 acre land base operating under a general partnership. This dairy operation installed a manure management technology that allows for the recovery of reusable energy in the form of methane gas. The methane is used to generate electricity to operate the main farm facility with some left over to sell to a utility. The management system allows for proper timing of manure land application to reduce nutrient runoff and odors and also to reduce the emissions of a greenhouse gas.

Mid-Size Business

Corning Inc.
A new process was implemented at this facility in Canton that eliminated hydrogen chloride (HCl) emissions. In the past, the plant generated several hundred tons per year of HCl from its glass-forming process. By redesigning this process, less hazardous raw material was used while maintaining the same high quality product. The process also resulted in lower energy use and decreased hazardous waste generation.

Large Business

IBM Endicott
This facility installed a Thin Panel Copper Plater system for the manufacturing of circuit boards. The new plater uses a multi-step process, including cleaning, preparatory etch, surface activation and copper plating. The improved plating process results in lower energy use and decreased hazardous waste generation.

Federal, State and Local Governments and Educational Institutions

United States Military Academy - West Point
The USMA is a federal service academy with a full range of academic, military, and athletic activities. By implementing process modification, material substitution, and improved material management, the USMA has reduced the environmental effects of its activities. Numerous pollution prevention programs demonstrate a strong overall commitment to environmental protection.

University of Rochester
The University implemented a project at Strong Memorial Hospital to reduce mercury pollution. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the mercury reduction program, the hospital substituted equipment that uses mercury with electronic and mercury-free equipment and eliminated mercury compounds from certain activities within the clinical labs.

Trade Associations or Other Business/Industry Groups

New York Power Authority
This project involved replacing old inefficient refrigerators at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residences with new highly efficient ones. The new refrigerators use less electricity, reducing the generation of waste and pollutants from electric generating stations. Components of the old refrigerators were recycled, minimizing the need for landfill space and reusing a potential waste stream. In addition, refrigerant gas, compressor oil, and PCB and non-PCB capacitors were removed from the refrigerators by the recycler and shipped to a properly permitted recycler or disposer, thereby preventing them from becoming potential pollutants.
