Alox Corporation
Alox Corporation, located in Niagara Falls and employing 51 people is a worldwide marketer of corrosion inhibitors to the compound blenders of metal working fluids, rust preventatives, aerosol products and industrial coatings. Their project is based on the recycling of approximately 280,000 pounds per year of methanol during the production of an intermediate product. Raw material savings amount to approximately $31,000 per year based on current prices of methanol and it was estimated that a savings of $40,000 per year was realized from sewer bills.

LARGE BUSINESS

ITT Automotive-Fluid Handling Systems
ITT Automotive-Fluid Handling Systems employs 162 people at the plant in the Town of Gates. Using purchased aluminum tubing, the plant fabricates parts for automotive air conditioning and condenser units. The project consisted of the elimination of 1,1,1-trichloroethane by switching to an aqueous wash system. In addition the facility eliminated the acid wash process and resultant treated waste waters. This project resulted in annual savings of $645,649.

ITT Fluid Technology Corporation
ITT Fluid Technology Corporation employs 1090 people. The Seneca Falls operation manufactures pumps for municipal water supply, the chemical, petroleum and pulp and paper industries. This facility has been in operation for 156 years and is the largest manufacturer of pumps in the world. ITT installed an automated three-stage stainless steel parts cleaner and steam cleaner. They also switched to a low VOC paint and the paint-application equipment was changed to a high-volume, low-pressure type. In addition, the Seneca Falls Operation decided to offer a minimum number of paints that could cover the broadest range of products. These paints or a combination thereof covered every condition the pumps could be subjected to. This change is expected to reduce the waste generated by 7100 pounds in 1998. This project has the potential to save more than $100,000 annually by reducing the quantity of paint purchased and the need to dispose of the excess.

Lockheed Martin Ocean, Radar & Sensor Systems
Lockheed Martin Ocean, Radar & Sensor Systems, located in Syracuse and employing 2100, is a supplier of airborne and ground-based radars, surface ship and sonar systems as well as marine traffic management for commercial and military applications. The traditional solder process they had used was replaced with a no-clean solder process where the cleaning steps were eliminated from the solder process thus increasing productivity by reducing cycle time for assembly. Cycle time was reduced 12 percent, which equated to $270,000 savings in labor costs in 1996 and 1997. It is projected that complete implementation of this process will result in $806,000 savings in labor costs in 1998. This process is easily transferable to other manufacturers with soldering operations.

Oneida Limited/Oneida Silversmiths Division
Oneida Limited/Oneida Silversmiths Division is located in Sherrill and employs 2400 people. It is a manufacturer of stainless steel and silverplated silverware. Their project consisted of the replacement of trichloroethylene vapor degreasers with aqueous washes. Trichloroethylene emissions were reduced 268,000 pounds a six year period (93 percent).
