Hiking Basics
Ever thought about walking in the woods or along marked trails, but you don't know where to begin? Do you currently hike but want to explore more areas or hike with a group? Join the Bullthistle Hiking Club for a presentation on the basics of hiking. Topics will include where to hike, proper gear, ideal clothing, and basic hiking tips. Attendees will be given upcoming dates for a variety hikes hosted by the Bullthistle Hiking Club. A short, optional hike will begin after the presentation.

Volunteers will be able to help with one of these projects:
• Install new trail markers and sign posts.
• Prune branches that are growing into the trail.
• Install bog bridging along a couple sections of muddy trail.
• Clean up trash.
We will plan on meeting at the entrance gate on Peninsula Way, which starts between the Comfort Inn and the Dack Shack restaurant along State Route 86. Follow this road of 0.4 miles to a small parking area on the left. Ages 13 and up. Sign up to volunteer on the Parks & Trails New York website.

Trail clearing and signing along the "Blue Trail" (approximately 1.6 miles in length). This will include clearing the trail of any sticks and debris. We will also clean up garbage and debris from across the road, at the former Squadrito Parcel, which is adjacent to where the wild blue lupine plants grow. Ages 13 and up. Kaaterskill Falls, one of New York's tallest waterfalls is among the most iconic and highly visited sites in the Catskills. Located in Hunter NY, Kaaterskill Falls has been a major tourist attraction for over a hundred years. The falls have been a major site for the Hudson River School painters and have had some of the world's largest wooden hotels.
• Plant a mix of native trees along the riparian corridor in order to help stabilize the stream bank and protect water quality. Mostly upland tree species and some possible native shrub species.
• Brush in herd paths caused by hikers traveling off trail around the top of the falls. Volunteers will attempt to hide these paths to encourage hikers to stay on the designated trails.
• Clean up litter that has collected over the winter months.

Our Board Director will take volunteers to our various trails to access any damage, replace trail markers and brochures and remove refuse at the trail head. Participants should also dress properly wearing long pants, socks, boots or old sneakers, long sleeves and hats.
Project 2- Stony Kill Foundation hosts their Spring Celebration & Plant Sale on May 6 from 11 am to 3 pm and relies on volunteers to help set up, work various stations, and break down the event. If you would like to work a half day or full day, we would love the help.
