DEC Announces Development of the Newfield Unit Management Plan

Public Comments Accepted from December 8 through January 8

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced the start of the planning process for the Newfield Unit Management Plan (UMP). Located in New York's Central-Southern Tier Region, the Newfield Unit includes both Newfield and Cliffside State Forests, encompassing approximately 2,518 acres of land in southwestern Tompkins and southeastern Schuyler counties. The Unit is adjacent to the Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area. Currently, the recreational uses available in the Newfield Unit include hunting, trapping, fishing, informal hiking and dispersed horseback riding.

"The unit management plan is a valuable tool for the public and DEC," said Regional Director Ken Lynch. "DEC recognizes that public participation is a very important part of creating the UMP and seeks public comments and ideas as the plan is developed. The planning process helps build and strengthen partnerships with volunteers and other stakeholders who enjoy the many recreational opportunities and natural resources which these forests offer."

Unit Management Plans assess the natural, physical, social and recreational resources of the landscape and provide a solid foundation for the development of long-term land management goals, objectives and actions. The public is invited to share its ideas about plan development during the scoping period which runs from December 8, 2014 to January 8, 2015. To accommodate the various stakeholders, this can be done in a number of ways including:
